Radhi Zaveri is waiting to hear from her editor about the murder mystery that she has written – based somewhat on the murder that she solved in A Mumbai Murder Mystery. While waiting, she is researching an article concerning her aunt’s business, the top matchmaking company in Mumbai. And who would have guessed, but before too long a murder takes place in the offices.
The private investigator used by the company to check out potential suitors for the customers knew a lot of secrets, both from possible customers and from the people who worked for the company. But which secret was enough to get her killed?
OK, something of a detached review today. My head is completely stuffed with cold – has been for a couple of days – and this one needed a little bit of concentration on my part. It’s got a fairly large cast of characters, all with unfamiliar names and nicknames – obviously, really, given the setting – and even after taking a few notes, my germ-raddled brain got lost a few times.
A shame, really, as Meeti Shroff-Shah seems to get how to plot a mystery. There’s a real classic feel to the plot structure. As often is the case these days, our heroine does mention Dame Agatha once or thrice, but unlike, say, The Mysterious Case Of The Missing Crime Writer where the mentions of classic authors, felt like set decoration and not much more, here the author is using Christie as her template for the plot and it works well.
I’m really disappointed that I picked this one to read when my brain wasn’t working – pretty sure I’d have enjoyed it a load more if I’d be running at anything like full capacity – but I’ve got a review copy of Book Three on my Kindle, so I’ll make sure I’m in fine fettle when that one comes around.
