Just a quick post to let you know that there won’t be any blog posts this week due to me going off on holiday! Hurrah! Term is over (finally) so me and Mrs Puzzle Doctor are off to a cottage in Herefordshire for some down time. Which, of course, means plenty of time for reading.
However, a request for advice. For the first time ever, I’ll be visiting the book heaven called Hay-On-Wye. Has anyone got any suggestions for the best bookshops for crime fiction, especially second hand Golden-Age books?
In the meantime, I’ve got loads to read. For older books, I’m currently midway through The Templar, The Queen and Her Lover by Michael Jecks, and I’m also taking Star Trap by Simon Brett for #1977book for Past Offences’ Crimes Of The Century. For new books – well, there’s at least the latest from Sharon Bolton, Dead Woman Walking, and Stuart MacBride, A Dark So Deadly. On top of that, Jeffrey Deaver’s latest Lincoln Rhyme thriller, The Burial Hour, will be on its way to a blog near you soon, along with recent releases from Caro Ramsay and Chris Nickson. And probably something from John Rhode as well. Can’t neglect the Golden Age entirely…
Anyway, I’ll be off now. I’ll leave you with the best thing I’ve seen in the past couple of weeks. Painted on the back of an ice cream van. What was the artist thinking?
Indeed, what was the artist thinking?! If they’re going to do a reference to the Scooby Doo episode The Ghost of the Bad Humor Man, the least they could do is paint the ghost in one of the three Technicolors (Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla) like they appeared in the show, right?!
(Enjoy your holiday!)

The ghost looks like Ghost Face from the Scream movies and he’s holding an ice cream. So perhaps the artist was going for a visual word joke (i.e. ice scream).
Yes, enjoy your holiday!

I presume you’re pointing out Ghost Face for Ho-Ling, not for me. But I Scream does make sense. Cheers.

I recently heard of a fantastic shop called Mystery and Mayhem at Hay. A second hand book shop that specialises in all things Golden Age. I am dying to visit! Though my bank account would probably rather I didn’t 😂 it looks like a mystery fiction fan’s heaven!
