Un Nouveau Livre De Brian Flynn ? Peut-être…

OK, Flynnophiles, calm down. It’s not actually a new Brian Flynn title – or an announcement of more reprints – but it’s a first for me.

In my introductions to Brian’s books, I’ve mentioned translations of his work – Brian himself mentioned a few languages in an interview – but I’ve only found evidence of De 22 Svarta in Swedish and War es der Zahnarzt? in German.

Now, thanks to my rigorous detective work, I’ve discovered a French title, mistakenly, I presume, published under the name “Bryan Flynn”. It definitely wasn’t found by me accidentally typing in Bryan rather than Brian into eBay, let’s be clear on that.

Now it’s winging its way to me already, but a quick quiz – what Flynn novel is it a translation of?

La Mort Frappe Au Même Endroit translates as Death Strikes In The Same Place – which doesn’t really fit any of the early titles. The cover possible hints at The Creeping Jenny Mystery (the thief) or The Orange Axe (the mask) but not really. So, dear reader, you’ve got until the book arrives and I manage to translate enough of it…

UPDATE: OK, the cat is out of the bag, the book is, oddly enough, The Case Of Elymas The Sorceror, the thirtieth Bathurst title. It’s enjoyable, but far from his best. But is this the only French translation? Can anyone help on this? Or point me in the direction of whatever was published in Danish? There was something, according to Brian at least…

  1. I speak French and have done a bit of research. It appears to be Elymas the Sorceror – though you’ll be able to confirm that when it arrives. French translation date: 1946 but appears to have been reprinted in French as a paperback in the mid-70s.
